I will never forget the times I brought a wealth of real-world experience to my class or to my military job—but beneath my calm, disciplined demeanor, I was fighting battles few could see. PTSD. Isolation. And the challenge of navigating where I felt like I didn’t quite belong. Historically, Black veterans faced an uphill climb in the world of education. After WWII, many were denied access to the full benefits of the GI Bill due to segregation and racism. Even today, Black veterans are often underrepresented in college classrooms and underserved by academic support systems. This raises an important question: What can educators do to create a more inclusive, welcoming, and empowering environment for Black veterans in higher education?
